Superlative

Regra geral: Formamos o superlativo dos adjetivos curtos escrevendo THE antes deles e, em seguida, acrescentamos o sufixo –EST ao adjetivo.       

rich – the richest                    

cheap – the cheapest

cold – the coldest                    Yesterday is was the coldest day of the year.           

tall – the tallest

short – the shortest

Se o adjetivo terminar em E, acrescentamos apenas ST:

large – the largest                   

safe – the safest                                  A motorcycle is not one the safest means of transportation.

nice – the nicest

Se o adjetivo terminar em Y precedido de consoante, trocamos Y por IEST:

happy –  the happiest             

easy – the easiest                    This is the easiest test I’ve ever done.

lazy – the laziest

Se o adjetivo terminar na sequência consoante – vogal – consoante, dobramos a última consoante para acrescentar EST:

big –  the biggest                    

hot – hottest                            Yesterday it was the hottest day of this summer.

thin – the thinnest

Atenção: esses adjetivos são irregulares: good – the best (o melhor) bad – the worst (o pior)

Formamos o superlativo dos adjetivos longos escrevendo a expressão THE MOST antes do adjetivo.

beautiful – the most beautiful                                   

modern – the most modern

polluted – the most polluted               That is one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil.

interesting – the most interesting

ancient – the most ancient
